How to Heat Up Conversations on Sex: Learning From Heated Rivalry

If you haven’t watched the show, you likely still know its name. Heated Rivalry quickly became a sensation, amassing 324 million minutes streamed during its season one finale week. But its sultry plot is doing more than just turning viewers on; it is reminding us what passionate, intense, and intimate sex can look like. By doing so, the show is creating a natural space for partners to engage in sexual communication: just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Heated Rivalry follows professional hockey players Shane and Ilya as they navigate a secret affair while serving as the NHL’s two most notable captains. But how does a show filled with romance and drama open the door for real-world communication? What does that communication even sound like, and why is it so vital?

Sexual communication is for everyone, not just for characters in their mid-20s whose sex lives improve as they learn to love authentically. On television, we are often sold the idea that sex naturally gets better with age. While this can be true for those whose communication skills expand over time, it is not a universal rule. Our bodies change as we age, and so do our desires, likes, and dislikes. We may need to find new ways to experience pleasure, yet many couples put immense pressure on themselves to have “good” sex. Ironically, that pressure often leads to lower desire and less satisfaction.

So, how can we use Heated Rivalry as a catalyst for better communication? Below are tips for navigating these conversations. You might even find that these tools apply to almost any topic, not just sex.

1. Externalize the Conversation

Talking about our own desires can be daunting, but discussing a character’s choices encourages free-flowing communication. By framing the conversation around Shane or Ilya, you create a “buffer zone” where you and your partner can be vulnerable while still feeling safe.

Try saying:

  • “What did you think when Shane tried xyz with Ilya in that last scene?”

  • “I loved when Ilya did xyz; it was so hot. What do you think about trying something like that?”

  • “I actually didn’t like how they responded to xyz. It didn’t feel like my style.”

2. Lead With Curiosity

If your partner mentions something they find sexy or uncomfortable about the show, use it as a doorway to learn more about them. If they say, “Wow, Ilya watching Shane like that was so intense,” follow up without judgment.

Try saying:

  • “Which part of that was the sexiest for you?”

  • “Ooh, tell me more about why you liked that.”

These questions can shift the conversation toward power dynamics, new positions, consent, or dirty talk. Remember: having a conversation about sex does not mean you have to have sex immediately after. The goal is to build a safe space for disclosure.

3. Define What Sex Means to You

Heated Rivalry highlights how the meaning of sex can evolve over time. For one person, sex is about emotional intimacy; for another, it is a form of validation; for a third, it may be strictly about physical pleasure. Most people feel a complex mix of all three. Understanding what sex represents for both you and your partner creates deeper awareness of the role it plays in your unique relationship.

4. Identify Your “Sexual Scripts”

A sexual script is like a playbook we follow, often unconsciously, based on social norms. These scripts look different for everyone. Some follow traditional gender roles, such as a male initiator and a submissive female partner, while others break those stereotypes entirely.

You can use the show to audit your own scripts by observing the characters: “Shane seems to be taking the submissive role here, but in that other scene, it felt different.” By stating your observations on the characters, you can pivot to your own routines. The beauty of sexual scripts is that you do not have to follow just one; it can be really fun to explore new “plays” together.

While Heated Rivalry is a thrill to watch, its greatest value might be the lessons it teaches about intimacy. It is the perfect impetus to start, restart, or deepen the conversation about your sex life.

I hope your inspired conversations make this Valentine’s Day one to remember. If you’d like to explore new ways to communicate your desires, I can be reached at maya@chaminajjan.com or 917.476.9381.
